Modern SEO – Busting Some SEO Myths
SEO is ALWAYS changing, and as an experienced SEO agency, we make sure to be abreast of these changes and evolve our technical approach along with them.
Change also brings misinformation and misconceptions, and these can make life incredibly confusing for business owners and digital marketers. Many pervasive myths exist around SEO, some due to the complexity of the SEO landscape, some thanks to conflicting advice, as well as outdated or fallacious information, anecdotal evidence, rapid algorithm changes, and lack of clarity from search engines themselves.
Let’s bust some myths about SEO in 2026!
KEY INSIGHTS
- Organic search delivers more than 50% of website traffic globally, and search engine optimisation remains the most popular, sustainable growth channel for businesses online.
- Many myths and misconceptions surround SEO, and it’s important to understand the truth in terms of everything from SEO requirements for your website to keyword analysis and selection, link-building, AI-search needs and their limitations, and much more.
- SEOcycle is an experienced, Australian-owned website design and SEO company offering tailored, high-quality, economical SEO services, web development, and writing services. Working with clients of all sizes, our main focus is on small- and medium-sized businesses. We provide affordable solutions for clients all over Australia and internationally, as well as white-label SEO services to digital marketing companies.
As we charge towards the middle of 2026, search engine optimisation (SEO) remains the most popular and sustainable growth channel available today for your business online. Organic visibility has a compounding effect, contrary to Paid Ads that cease as soon as you stop paying for them.
Counter to popular belief, SEO is here to stay – but, as the algorithm changes, and techniques and user behaviours evolve, so too must the approach taken by your SEO provider.
There’s a LOT of noise out there about SEO, AI, link-building, keywords, content requirements, and so much more. Knowing what is legitimate, correct, and relevant can be difficult; how your chosen provider approaches their SEO services matters, too.
SEOcycle is here to help clarify things.
A Quick Look Back…
We have previously published an article that looked at 7 SEO Myths and Misconceptions. Now, as the digital realm and online search tools and techniques have evolved, it’s time to revisit this topic and take a look at some more of the fallacies about SEO that are confusing for business owners and that far too many people are inclined to believe.
There are several common misconceptions relating to SEO that we debunked in our prior article, and what we stated about them then still stands:
- MYTH 1: “Keyword Research is Not Required”
- MYTH 2: “Black Hat Techniques are a Good Idea”
- MYTH 3: “Title Tags and Meta Descriptions Don’t Matter”
- MYTH 4: “Content Doesn’t Matter”
- MYTH #5: “I Don’t Need to Update My Website”
- MYTH #6: “Links Don’t Matter”
- MYTH #7: “Any Digital Marketer Can Do SEO”
All of these statements are FALSE! These, however, are not the only things people get wrong about SEO as it exists in 2026.
5 Biggest 2026 SEO Myths – Busted!
- Myth: More keywords result in higher ranks.
No. Today, keyword stuffing will only get your website penalised in search engine results. Overuse of keywords is obvious, annoying, and makes content unreadable. Modern search engines are now prioritising the user experience, and naturally incorporating relevant keywords into high-quality content that is optimised for user intent is the way to succeed.
- Myth: SEO is a one-time effort.
Too many people still view SEO as a set of discrete tactics rather than an ongoing and dynamic strategic endeavour that you commit to for the long term. Rather than the quick wins that Paid Ads can deliver but then quickly drop, SEO sets your business up for long-term visibility and lasting organic results. This is why it’s important to choose a professional SEO provider who delivers services with expertise and at a price you can afford.
- Myth: SEO gives instant, guaranteed results.
Any SEO or digital marketing company that tells you this is not telling you the truth. SEO is not a quick fix, and results are never 100% guaranteed. The right provider, however, will work closely with you to understand your business, your goals online, and analyse your website and niche to determine the best approach for you to achieve optimum outcomes to rank online for your most relevant and potentially successful search terms. SEO should be an ongoing strategy and campaign for lasting results.
- Myth: Websites are irrelevant when AI provides answers.
AI models work by aggregating information from a plethora of sources. You ideally want your website to become one of these sources – and your website is the central hub where you control the narrative about your brand, business, and the information you provide to users.
Moreover, your business likely relies on clickthroughs, website visits, queries, calls, and conversions. Audiences who just look at AI results (and this is an exponentially increasing number of users), rather than visiting actual websites, are not going to tangibly benefit your business and bottom line much at all.
You need to consider AI results as another tool to generate leads and increase your online visibility and authority. They are not, in any way, the be-all and end-all.
- Myth: AI eliminates any requirement for SEO.
This is a big one – and the answer is a resounding NO. What is changing is the need for SEO to incorporate GEO, or generative engine optimisation. GEO builds and expands upon established SEO principles, and AI runs on top of, rather than replaces, SEO. Content must be discoverable by search engines, as well as, ideally, be selected as a primary source for AI-generated answers.
Traditional SEO is as critical as ever – and you must understand that using fully-automated AI-SEO tools comes with its own dangers. (This will be covered by us in a future article.) It’s important to know HOW your SEO provider conducts your campaign – because leaving it all to an AI tool (which some providers do) may ultimately cause irreparable damage to your online ranks and reputation.
